Mark Zuckerberg Bets on Personal Superintelligence: AI Agents for Everyone

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has laid out his vision for the AI era: rather than letting a handful of corporations control superintelligence, Meta wants to give every person their own personal AI agent.
In his new position paper "The Future is for Everyone", Zuckerberg argues that AI should not primarily be a tool for automating work, but a technology that massively expands what individuals can do.
Personal superintelligence instead of centralized AI
At the core of the paper is one question: who will control the most powerful AI systems? Meta clearly positions itself against centralized control and in favor of broad distribution — a kind of "balance of power" in which billions of people run their own AI systems.
Zuckerberg names three key principles:
- individual self-determination as the foundation of prosperity,
- invention and innovation as the main use case for superintelligence,
- the widest possible distribution of AI capability as the basis for safety.
An AI agent that truly knows you
Meta envisions a personal agent that knows your goals, interests and circumstances — assisting around the clock with health, career, finances or family projects. AI glasses are expected to become a key interface beyond the smartphone.
Because such an agent would handle highly sensitive data, Meta promises a fully private mode in which even the provider cannot access personal information — modeled on WhatsApp's end-to-end encryption. Technical details remain open.
Free access — and massive data centers
Meta plans free AI tiers for billions of users, with additional compute available for purchase. To make the required data center expansion socially acceptable, the company promises local benefits — jobs, school funding and a "Future Is For Everyone Fund" for host communities.
Open source and independent oversight
For the AI industry, two announcements stand out: Meta Superintelligence Labs will release open-source models again, and Meta's independent board of directors is to approve the safety criteria for future model releases — no single person should decide alone.
Zuckerberg also calls for closer cooperation between AI labs and the US government, including early access to training checkpoints of powerful models.
Assessment
"The Future is for Everyone" is less a product launch than a manifesto: not one superintelligence, but billions of personal AI agents — more power for individuals instead of central institutions. Whether the vision is technically, economically and socially feasible remains an open question.
