Google Cloud's Gemini Agent: A Universal AI Assistant for Work
Published October 8, 2026
Google Cloud has unveiled the Gemini Agent, a universal AI assistant for work: it plans tasks autonomously, connects to Salesforce, Jira and Slack, picks the best model, Gemini or Anthropic's Claude, and keeps working in the cloud with the laptop closed.
Work begins in the prompt window
At the Gemini at Work 2026 event, Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian presented one assistant for the entire working world, handling knowledge work, questions, media and code behind one API. Google's numbers back the ambition: nearly 500 customers each processed over a trillion tokens last year, about 80 percent of Google Cloud customers use its AI products, and almost 90 percent of the Fortune 100 run Gemini Enterprise.
Goals, not step-by-step prompts
Users delegate outcomes, not instructions. The agent plans the steps, picks skills and tools, connects to corporate systems and returns results, acting as a personal assistant or team member with a fixed role. It shares one context across devices and channels, and work that takes hours or days keeps running with the laptop closed. For big projects, it spawns sub-agents with their own identities over days. As a permanent coworker, it gets an email address (@agents.companyname.com), own storage and only the information given to it.
Tools, skills, memory
A tool registry connects the agent to Slack, Teams, Confluence and Workspace, to Git, Jira, Salesforce and ServiceNow, and to databases like BigQuery, Databricks and Snowflake, plus local files and servers implementing the Model Context Protocol (MCP). Skills are reusable prompt packages; Google ships a global library companies can extend. Four types of memory anchor recall: session, semantic, procedural, episodic.
Open models, tight costs
Each task goes to the best-fitting model, currently Gemini or Anthropic's Claude, with more to follow. PayPal routes about ten million multi-model requests per week. Smart Routing sends each workload to the model with the best performance at the lowest price, and per-project spending limits pause the agent once reached, sensible since token prices have fallen 98 percent since 2024 while enterprise data exploded.
Security, results and caveats
Every agent gets a cryptographically attested identity with minimal rights, and every action lands in an audit log tied to the agent. An Agent Gateway acts as a firewall enforcing corporate policies in real time, keeping agents out of need-to-know documents. Tasks execute in a sandbox, and it works inline across Gmail, Drive, Docs, Sheets and Calendar.
First customers report effects: Bradesco cut document reviews from one hour to five minutes and reduced risk discrepancies by 60 percent; SOMPO runs more than 10,000 AI agents for 34,000 employees; an internal agent at Wesfarmers' Bunnings saved half a million admin hours.
Google previewed industry versions for finance and law firms, with government, healthcare and retail to follow, plus analytics skills for plain-language insights, on TPU-8i systems with a claimed 80 percent better price-performance. All of this remains vendor claims; production use will show how far it matches the ambition.
